Any Accident. Any Injury. Anywhere.

Did You Know? - May is Motorcycle Safety Month

May 5th 2023

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) May is motorcycle safety awareness month. Unfortunately, motorcycle riders continued to be overrepresented in fatal traffic crashes.

In 2020, 5,579 motorcyclists died in traffic crashes [1]. Furthermore, per vehicle miles traveled in 2020, motorcyclists were about 28 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash. Motorcyclists were also 4 times more likely to be injured [2]. In Canada, motorcycles were involved in 9.5% of all fatal collisions in 2020 [3].

Accordingly, NHTSA suggests the following before riding your motorcycle (note, this is not an exhaustive list) [2]:

  1. Make sure you are properly licensed. Of the motorcyclists who were involved in fatal accidents in 2020, 36% were operating their motorcycle without a valid motorcycle license.
  2. Be sure you practice operating your motorcycle.
  3. Before riding your motorcycle, it is good practice to check your motorcycle’s tire pressure and tread depth, both the hand and foot brakes, headlights and signal indicators, and fluid levels. Be sure to check for any signs of an oil or gas leak. Make sure all extra cargo is secured and the load is balanced.
